VP – Automation and Digitization Engineering Manager

Job Overview:

The primary focus of the Automation and Cognitive Software technology team at LPL Financial is to design, build and maintain the sustainable, highly performant, scalable capabilities that support the delivery of world-class standards of software products and processes. As VP & Engineering Manager for Automation & Digitization, you will be leading a team responsible for designing and building the technology behind Digital Workers (aka Bots) of varying cognitive complexity as well as building solutions with reimagined User Experiences that support Digital Operations for LPL.  

What will you be responsible for?

  • Delivery of High-speed, high quality & optimally priced software that delivers highest value & prioritized business outcomes.
    • You will be responsible for Automation Factory of 2-3 Agile Pods made up of FTE’s & Vendor contractors. You will be responsible for Pod design that delivers high value product using technical capabilities of Digital Operation Platform.
    • You will work with Product Owners & other business and technology stakeholders across various LPL business units to influence Business Epics prioritization, work break down-structures such that we are able to deliver value fastest & cheapest.
    • You will continually study delivery metrics from Opportunity Discovery to full adoption of product to value and make changes people, process and technical approaches to continually reduce delivery friction, increase Pod through-put (business epics delivered/quarter) & optimize via QE and DevOps automation best practices.
    • You will responsible to manage functional & engineering IP balance between FTE & Vendor contractors to avoid SPOF, avoid excessive vendor dependency, & have optimal design for coverage between on-shore and off-shore.
  • Technical Craftsmanship & Platform Management
    • You be responsible for owning and managing technical debt of Platform capabilities that are used to onboard and build products on Digital Operating Platform. Responsible for governance, cross-pod best practices, timely upgrades and used of advance features.
    • You will be accountable and responsible Platform Epics. You will the champion & voice of Platform Engineering  to advocate & influence Platform Epics with Product Owner by connecting importance of the Platform Epics for accelerate or enable Business Epics.
    • You will partner with other peer Platforms Leads & Architecture teams to avoid duplication of capabilities and stay in strategic alignment of “intended use of various Platforms”.
    • You also innovate via experimentation & partnership with newer vendors offering enhanced capabilities at similar of cheaper price-points.
    • You will be responsible to Operational Stability of Platform and all the Products aligned your Factory. You will be partnering with Product Support and Cloud IaaS organization to setup Monitoring, Alerting and Incident Mgmt SOPs.
  • Leadership & People Management- Develop future leaders & Engineering Craftsmanship.
    • You will be servant-leader style supervisor to Pods—prompting teams towards self-managing behaviors but at times exercising executive decision making by showing or solving yourself.
    • Hire the best and brightest talents that fit & support into LPL’s core mission and values. You will also responsible to support Jr Hire Talent, their onboarding and ensuring equity and diversity.
    • Should be able to attract respect as technical coach & advisor to team. Build a team that leads with engineering craftsmanship & innovative ways to solve same problems exponentially faster and cheaper.
    • You will be responsible to avoid FTE or Vendor SPOFs & when it can’t be avoided you will be responsible for creation of succession plans for SPOF FTEs and/or key Vendor resources.
    • You will be responsible for team’s continuous learning & upskilling via experiments, online courses & yearly development plans.

What are we looking for? 

We are looking for a hands-on engineering leader who can manage upstream and downstream of engineering pods. Ideal candidate has lead high-tech engineering teams, is start-up minded, and has frugal/lean management style with ability to manage stakeholders of varying authority levels, technical knowledge and appreciation for complexity of operating a product-platform & its engineering. We want strong collaborators who can effectively communicate and provide transparency on progress or lack of progress. We are looking for people who thrive in a fast-paced environment, have proven analytical and problem-solving abilities, can absorb and retain information quickly, and can execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.

What skills, experiences, and education are required? 

  • Has a total of 12+yrs IT experience & minimum 5-10 yrs experience in interacting with Business & Technical Stakeholders and managing their expectations.
  • Has proven ability to Digitize/Modernize analog operational processes. So has hands-on understanding of this space to solution, engineer & stably operate using :
    • Cloud/ SaaS hosted capabilities such as AWS or Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud
    • Built and deployed self-service digital experience apps via B2B or B2C channels
    • Build and supported ODS, build supporting Analytics and Reporting tools
    • Experience with business process management systems
    • Experience of operating Product or Platform stably viz BCP/DR , managing scale-ups/downs & production support
  • Has lead & managed engineering teams with FTEs and Vendor contractors directly reporting to him/her.
  • Has experience in managing to the budget & as well as supporting continuous planning process.
  • Has 2-5yrs experience in running engineering Pods that followed SAFe cadence for their day-2-day cadence.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, both oral and written.

What skills and experiences are preferred (not required)?

  • Has experience building technology solutions for business operations & call center space.
  • RPA open source or commercial vendor of tools such: WorkFusion  RoboCorp, RoboFramework, UiPath, AutomationAnywhere, Pega
  • Cloud-hosted Computer Vision or Intelligent Document Procession services: AWS Texttract, Comprehend, Augmented AI or Azure equivalents
  • Has some experience in deploying ML-apps in Production –using AutoML, or OpenSrc Model making tools or SaaS ML services
  • Ability to build short-persuasive pitches using various digital tools. Ability to build Data Stories and various diagrams (mindmaps, concept diagram, process flows, customer journey)
  • Facilitate group workshops to extract knowledge of existing processes
