VP Technology Product Owner

Position Description

Working independently, the VP of Product oversees the product owners that deliver technology solutions to advisors, internal customers and end investors.  The individual will be well versed in lean agile methodologies and product management frameworks; and have experience with the skills listed below.  The principle responsibilities for this position will be focused on setting up the business and technology teams for success.  This will include working cross functionally to ensure the backlogs, user stories, journey maps, creative designs, portfolio roadmaps, well-formed team resources, business architecture and solution architecture are well defined and understood by the teams for high velocity execution.

The VP of Product will manages the product owners on each lean agile development team.   Activities will also include daily oversight of product roadmap, voice of the customer, backlog quality, design sessions, sprint planning, program increments, solution architecture and software engineering to deliver value through frequent product releases ensuring the teams are delivering value against the organizations strategic plays and OKRs.

The candidate for this role will be required to leverage their knowledge and skill set to work with our advisors and internal teams to deliver the technology and workflows that enable LPL to continuously improve our advisors’ experience by ultimately providing them with capabilities that allows them to manage their business more efficiently and productively.  Collaboration with internal business partners will be critical to ensure that these capabilities are delivered in a manner that captures our customer’s insights into how they manage business, maximizes our business objectives, and meets all regulatory requirements.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the product teams portfolio roadmap and ensure priorities per program increment are well defined

  • Champion and implement Product Management standards to ensure consistent execution and performance for all Product Owners on the team

  • Oversee strategic product discovery and demand management (including capacity management) ensuring the teams are utilizing key methods and tools necessary to define the problems they are solving and how they are delivering value through measurable results

  • Passion for driving the Advisor and Investor experience and ability to persuade others to share this vision, collaborate and execute; working with business partners to establish and nurture the product development lifecycle

  • Develop strategy to meet OKRs and vision are clear for the teams so all  user stories/features, business architecture and solution architecture are well defined to set the team up for success in execution and meet business and technology goals/key results

  • Ownership of the product health to engineer reliable, secure scalable solutions by prioritizing user stories that improve the quality requirements of the applications

  • Drive insights and practical recommendations through feedback from advisors, internal stakeholders and key partners across the enterprise

  • Accountable for release planning to coordinate cross functionally when dependencies exist between product releases, UAT and release sign off

  • Responsible for product Total Cost of Ownership to ensure a financial fit to the business goals

  • Responsible for partnering with technology leadership (ex: Architecture) to ensure the product meets the service level agreements for quality requirements (reliability, scalability, etc.) including business continuity and disaster recovery planning across all applications/products in their portfolio

  • Collaborating with digital designers to ensure a consumer centric design is executed as the center of the product engagement driving decisions for product outcomes, creative and user experience

  • Ensure Product Teams are following Agile standards and guidelines for delivery and backlog management

  • Ensure Scrum Masters, Program Managers and designers are performing against the Agile Services role definition and delivery expected artifacts for the product teams.

  • Ensure closed loop feedback processes are in place for all products and processes for monitoring and implementing feedback are adopted. Partner with Product Support on problem management; reduce support requests

  • Partner with Tech Lead on planning, estimates and pre-sprint/backlog solutions

  • Partner with Product Manager on product discovery for the products/portfolio

  • Partner with Business and Technology partners to define product usage metrics and define solutions with product team to deliver access to meaningful, self-service metrics

  • Partner with management team through improvement recommendations and enable the development of new growth opportunities by defining business cases and OKRs

  • Partner with all stakeholders to evaluate build versus buy decisions to support the product application suite / architecture


  • 7-10+ years of experience in product management related roles

  • 7+ years of developing, cultivating and leading strong, high-performing teams in an agile environment

  • Expertise driving strategic roadmaps including complex product demonstrate the ability to drive change across business boundaries

  • Excellence in technical communication with technical and non-technical peers

  • The ability to work in a cross-functional team and drive outcomes without having direct authority

  • Effective communication skills, both written and oral, and serve as one of the recognized subject matter experts on the team

  • Demonstrate business acumen and the ability to interact with senior leaders, including developing, presenting and gaining approval on any business cases and funding requests needed to further drive the execution of the roadmap

  • Actively anticipates, identifies and manages risks within product team


  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field; MBA or other equivalent work experience

  • Certification in SAFe® Product Owner / SAFe® Product Manager desired
